A Sense of Place: 10 Tracks from the OST Jukebox
Music that brings you back to a place, long after you've left it.
From the forests of Azeroth to the galactic Citadel, we remember video game spaces by the music that accompanied us there. Here are ten tracks that made a world feel real.
Limgrave (Elden Ring)
Part strings, part wind, the soundscape of Limgrave greets you at your first steps in The Lands Between. It moves through golden trees, over the iron chains of giants, quiet enough to mistake for the world itself. You will die often to its melody – until you are victorious. Then you will be sad, for you can't take it with you.
Galdin Quay (Final Fantasy XV)
A roadtrip with the boys can be full of danger, but not here in Galdin Quay. The water is warm, the beds are clean, the food is five-star — and with every stay, a 2-times multiplier to your XP. At a pretty penny of 10,000 gil, it's worth the price of admission.
Space (Outer Wilds)
Kick back, have a s'more, and turn up the volume as your humble spaceship carries you toward the wonders of our solar system. Ride the cyclones of Giant's Deep. Marvel at the haunting depths of Dark Bramble. Chase the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Quantum Moon. For the next 22 minutes, the cosmos is yours – just keep an eye on that sun!
The Banks of the Sansretour (The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine)
Velen is war-torn. Novigrad is oppressed. Skellige is cruel. But Touissant? Idyllic. Sun-bathed orchards lead to small abodes covered in green vines and bright flowers. The people are as married to their wines and fanfare as they are to each other. At the heart is the great Sansretour river, snaking between the villages and bringing life to the land.
Whirling-in-Rags, 8AM (Disco Elysium)
The reptilian voice inside your head says that Disco is back – it's time to wake up. Stumble into the Whirling-in-Rags, where the music is always playing, and nobody seems to care. This trancing groove was here before you existed, and it will be here when you depart. That's Disco.
Kyne's Peace (Skyrim)
From windswept tundras to sheer ice flows, the land of Skyrim is tonal. It is a cold, harsh atmosphere that hardens its populace and freezes the weak. It is also beautiful, and epic, and many roads lead to breathtaking vistas, where the score by Jeremy Soule rolls across the landscape.
Hall of Doors (Death's Door)
You are a mere crow, pulled out of time and place to the mysterious Hall of Doors. Its floating gateways lead you to many lands, but the way back will always be unlocked – a sanctuary offering respite... and a chance to level up.
City of Tears (Hollow Knight)
The Blue Lake seeps down through the earth, spilling into the cavern below and onto the gothic spires of a city caught in endless rainfall. The City of Tears earns its name, and this piano elegy sets the mood for your journey through it.
The Wards (Mass Effect)
The Citadel. Home to a thousand species, the seat of galactic power — and right now, your hunting ground. A Spectre has gone rogue, the Wards hum with danger, and Jack Wall's score pulses beneath every step. You're Commander Shepherd, and you approve of this track.
Elwynn Forest (World of Warcraft)
For many seasoned adventurers in Azeroth, it began in humble Elwynn Forest. Situated far from the cosmic threats, eternal dragons, and earth-shattering Titans, matters in Elwynn were more concerned with boars and bandits – and beers in Goldshire's tavern. No matter what corner of Azeroth has called you, the soft ambience of Elwynn Forest will bring you home.
